ÅreÅre became a village in 1888 due to the railway tracks that were laid in this part of Sweden. 100 years later it has become the largest skiing area in Scandinavia with over 100 slopes and 40 lifts. You can skii 1274 m over the sea and the longest slope is 6,5 km. There are many nice and fun activities during the winter period such as reindeer sledding, dog sledding and rubber boat skiing- and summer period such with mountain biking trekking and white water rafting. Within the boundaries of Åre you will encounter alpine massifs, lakes, wilderness and fertile agricultural land and the region has always attracted visitors. In the late 19th century the reasons for travelling to Åre changed. Many people wanted to escape the pollution in the industrialized areas and came to Åre to inhale the fresh air and admire the grand nature. Today it is a popular skiing resort for Swedes as well as others and the town is generating a lot of business opportunities making the landscape one of the best places to live according to some reports.
